Introduction: The Most Common Conversation in College

At the beginning of every semester, there is a typical conversation that college students can basically recite in their sleep.

1. What is your name?
2. Where are you from?
3. What year are you?
4. What is your major?
5. What is a fun fact about yourself?

To keep in the spirit of a good ol' college introduction, I will answer these famous five questions.

1. What is your name?

My name is Alesha Thompson.

2. Where are you from?

I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. I lived in the "Entertainment Capital" until I was ten. My parents decided that it was time to make it out of there before the city grew to trap us. We then moved across the country to Eudora, Mississippi.

This was the time I learned the true meaning of culture shock. Going from one of the biggest cities in the country to the smallest gathering of houses in the humid, mosquito-infested woods of the south was a big change.

Mississippi Woods (thanks to an invasive vine called kudzu)

We stayed in Eudora for a nice long time of...two years. My parents had us sit down and we all agreed to move out of Mississippi.

My dad got a job that allowed us to live in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Yes, I had gone from city to south to college town.

3. & 4. What year are you and what is your major?

I am in my junior year. Currently, I am majoring in Health and Exercise Science. I added a minor in Management of Information Systems. We will see how that plays out in the next two semesters! My dad is great with computers and he passed along his skills to his kids.

5. What is a fun fact about yourself?

I recently adopted a puppy. The place said she was a German Shepherd/Labrador Retriever. However, I am beginning to wonder if she has some Rottweiler or Husky somewhere in that mix. Her name is Lola and she is three months old. When she is not busy exploring or taunting the neighbor's dogs, she demands her (multiple) daily doses of attention.

I hope this answered some of your questions about me!

  1. Alesha, your puppy sounds ADORABLE! Will you post a picture of her on your blog in the future? Also, your move from Las Vegas to Eudora to Stillwater sounded like a drastic change in your family's life. I'm curious to know where your favorite place to live has been or if you want to live someplace else when you move on from college!

  2. Your whole blog looks amazing! I like the layout, because those are always the questions that need to be answered. Your childhood moving sounds like it kept you busy, but it is nice to see you transfer out of Poke territory. Hopefully your minor works out I think that would be a great combination. Your puppy sounds like a great distraction from schoolwork!

  3. Your family is very brave to move from somewhere as busy and exciting as Las Vegas out in to the middle of nowhere in Mississippi! I am from Houston and would still like to get away from the Gulf Coast at some point, there are way too many mosquitos and it is way too humid! I like the layout of your blog and all of the details and decoration that you have included, it is much more interesting than mine.

  4. From Las Vegas to Eudora: wow, Alesha, that would indeed be a dramatic change... from Sin City to kudzu. Stillwater sounds like a good solution to both! And I hope you will have fun with the computer stuff in this class: it's not like it's a big part of the class, but esp. in an online class, learning how to bend the computer to your will and making it obey you can definitely come in handy!

Meanwhile, your Lola sounds very cute! If she is just three months old now, you are going to see so many changes in her just this semester. Have fun with her: puppies are magic!!!

  5. Alesha!
Wow that was a major adjustment, going from living in a busy city to moving to the hot humid state of Mississippi. I have never been to Vegas, but that is on my to-do list before I leave college. I will definely talk to you before I go so that you can tell me about some fun things to do while im there.

  6. Hey Alesha! I like the design of your blog. It was funny to read this post because I have probably had similar conversations with a 100 different people. I too have made the move from the west to Oklahoma. I used to live in Sacramento, California. It took a while to adjust to Oklahoma. Sounds like your dog and my rabbit have a lot in common. She craves attention 24 hours a day.

  7. Nice to meet you, Alesha! I have never been to Vegas, however, my husband lived there before joining the military and he absolutely loved it. We are planning to go there together once I graduate. Also, I couldn’t imagine living in Mississippi. It just sounds too swampy for me to even want to go there. (I probably sound like the people that think Oklahoma is full of horses and cowboys). Your dog sounds adorable! My pup, Bailey, is a Pitbull and has a little bit of German Shepard in her.

  8. Hello, Alesha!

I am very happy to meet another MIS student! Health and Exercise Science is also a great major. I took two HES courses during my general education; they were very informative and useful. In real life, the knowledge I learnt can help me to build a healthy diet and maintain a good condition of my body.

I would recommend you take MIS as a major because it currently has a high demand of employment. However, if you do not enjoy the combination of business and IT, you could try Computer Science instead.

  9. Hi Alesha! I've visited Vegas for a Teach For America Alt. Spring Break trip. It was really interesting to see the community that lives there. It's different to see the true city behind all the tourist traps and lights. That would be a huge switch. I'd love to know what you enjoyed from each place. What are you looking to get out of your minor? Is there any classes you felt taught you a lot? I'm a computer science major so I'm into computers too.

  10. Wow, you have really experienced three completely different home town environments. I have never been to Vegas, but have always wanted to go. I can't imagine what it would be like to live there though! Funny that you live in Stillwater, but chose OU over OSU! I have only met a few other people like that. I am so jealous you just adopted a puppy! I have been dying to get one, but I want to wait until I get a house with a nice backyard.

  11. Hi, Alesha! Wow, what a unique childhood! It sounds like you gained a lot of valuable perspective from seeing so many different sides of American life. I'm so happy that you ventured from Stillwater to Norman eventually though! :)

I hope that you get a chance to post a picture of your puppy sometime. I love love love dogs and am very bummed to not have one at the moment. Even pictures make my day! haha

I'm excited to get to know you more throughout the semester!

  12. Hey Alesha! Having lived in one place all my life, I always like to hear about people who moved around more in their childhood. Also, my whole family went to OSU for college... except me. That said, I still love Stilly, and enjoy visiting when I get a chance. I second what Audra said- I really want to see a picture of your dog! My apartment doesn't allow pets, which I understand, but I love seeing other people's in the meantime! Hope your semester is going well!

  13. Alesha, it is so cool that you have gotten to live in so many different places. I’m sure you can feel at home in a variety of settings. Congratulations on the puppy! I really want to adopt one, but I don’t think my landlord would let me. Hopefully next year! Good luck with the new minor, that sounds like a great combination. I look forward to reading more of your writing!

  14. Hey Alesha! I find it so interesting that you have lived in three completely differently environments. That must have been quite an adjustment. I have only lived in one state, Oklahoma. In fact, I have only lived in three different cities ever, OKC, Mustang, and Yukon, so my environment is pretty much identical everywhere I have lived. Well, I hope you enjoy your semester! Good luck!

  15. Hi Alesha! That must have been a huge change, moving from Las Vegas to Mississippi. I moved a lot too when I was growing up, and I moved again when I came out to Oklahoma for school. It's really weird trying to explain what that's like to people that are born and raised in Norman! I hope you're enjoying the class so far!

  16. Hi Alesha. I hope your semester is going well so far! I can definitely see how moving around like your family would require a bit of adjustment every time. You seem to be doing pretty well though. Your minor may sound like an odd combination to go with your major but the skills you learn in MIS will be very useful. Your dog sounds awesome! I love German Shepherd dogs! I hope to get one soon. Good luck with your studies.

  17. It is true that most college introductions start with those five introductions. Sometimes, I think we should just get t-shirts with all of those facts listed. It does sound like you had an interesting change of homes from Las Vegas to Mississippi to Oklahoma. Until recently, I've spent most of my time living in Oklahoma, but living other places really gives you a neat sense of perspective. It sounds like you have a very interesting combination of perspectives from those places. Do you want to stay in Oklahoma when you graduate?

  18. I can only imagine how different it was to move from Las Vegas and adjust to life in Mississippi. Ive lived most of my life in Oklahoma and I like it here. Your major and minor sound interesting but very different as well. It is good to have variation. I am also a junior. I like the theme/background you used for your blog and also tho picture you attached above.

  19. That is probably the biggest change of pace I have every heard of in terms of moving towns.. I can imagine that it wasn't a very hard decision for you guys to move. Even Stillwater is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Sin City. Your dog sounds awesome too. We got our dog from the pound so it is always a guessing game of what all he has in him. I think those "muts" are the best

  20. Hey Alesha!
I have been to Las Vegas twice and really enjoyed it but I do not think I could live there. It is a little too lively for me. I have never been to Mississippi or Stillwater, Oklahoma. I am glad that you ended up at the University of Oklahoma though. I look forward to reading more of your posts!

  21. Hi Alesha! I thought it was pretty cool how you moved from the city to the south and then to a college town! I'm sure those must have been difficult moves but those changes must have given you some wonderful experiences! Your puppy sounds SO cute! I hope to see a picture of her on your blog somewhere soon! Good luck with all your future plans!

  22. Hello, Alesha! I got a good kick out of your introduction. The "good ol' college introduction" does seem to be passed around quite a lot! I am really familiar with kudzu vine as I lived in SC for a while. It's crazy! I also lived in Stillwater for a few years, but wasn't overly fond of it (read:boring. haha) Your puppy sounds really adorable! Good luck with the remainder of the semester and finals week!

  23. Hey Alesha! I’m from Las Vegas too! I wasn’t born there, but I was raised there from a young age and left when I was twenty-three to Oklahoma. It definitely is a culture shock going from a 24/7 city to a place where 3.2 beer is a thing and most of the town shuts down on Sundays. Oklahoma has grown on me though, as I hoped it has for you.

  24. Hey Alesha! I am actually surprised I have not done your introduction. So even thought it is late, Nice to meet you. Do you miss las vegas? One of my friends Tim moved there and he told he does not like the dryness and the heat. I could not see the image cause my computer was being really weird,. Anyways it was great to meet you.
